How Cluely AI works in cheat on exams 

CluelyAI can be secretly used by students during exams, especially oral tests or in-person written exams. Here’s how it works in that setting:

A student wears a small Bluetooth earpiece and keeps their phone hidden in their pocket or bag. Cluely AI is already running quietly on the phone. When the examiner asks a question, Cluely AI listens through the hidden microphone and quickly turns the spoken words into text. That text is either sent to an AI like ChatGPT or processed directly by Cluely AI if it has a connected system.

The AI then comes up with an answer, which CluelyAI reads back through the earpiece. The student hears the answer and repeats it out loud, sounding confident and knowledgeable even if they didn’t know the answer themselves.

This whole process happens within a few seconds, making it fast and hard to notice. Because there’s no typing or touching the phone, it can be very difficult for teachers or examiners to detect.

Developed by Roy Lee

Roy Lee and Neel Shanmugam, the developers of Cluely, started by building a tool called Interview Coder while at Columbia University. Their goal was to challenge platforms like LeetCode, which they saw as outdated and unfair for measuring real coding skills.

Both used Interview Coder to land top internships at Meta, TikTok, Amazon, and more. But after Lee posted a video using it in an Amazon interview, Columbia suspended and eventually expelled them. Instead of backing down, they dropped out and focused on Cluely full-time.

Now, as developers turned founders, Lee and Shanmugam are expanding Cluely beyond coding interviews—into sales, customer support, and online exams—making it a bold and controversial AI tool built by coders who aren’t afraid to disrupt the system.
